Welcome to the Flatmate Flow blog
Honest takes on shared living: the bills, the chores, the budget, and the awkward conversations no one wants to have. This is where we'll write about the stuff.
Why we're starting a blog#
Most "roommate advice" on the internet is the same five articles rewritten on different domains. House rules. Splitting bills 50/50. A passive-aggressive note template. None of it engages with what shared living is actually like in 2026: rents at record highs, one housemate on a casual contract, another paying off a HECS debt, somebody's partner who unofficially lives there four nights a week.
This blog is for the actual mess. Not the Pinterest version.
What we'll write about#
A few categories you can expect:
- Bills, the realistic way. Not "split everything equally": actual frameworks for when one person earns twice as much, when someone's away for a month, when the gas bill arrives three months late.
- Chores without resentment. Why "whoever notices it does it" almost always falls on the same person, and what to do about it.
- The household budget. Tracking shared spend without turning it into a forensic audit.
- Awkward conversations. How to ask for the rent share back, how to raise the cleanliness thing, how to handle a flatmate who's quietly stopped contributing.
- Product updates. When we ship something to Flatmate Flow that we think you'll care about, we'll explain what it does and why we built it.
How we write#
A few promises:
- We organise the post around what you came for, not SEO filler. If a question is answerable in two paragraphs, you'll get two paragraphs.
- We use Australian English (organise, not organize; behaviour, not behavior).
- We won't pretend Flatmate Flow solves problems it doesn't. If a piece of advice has nothing to do with our app, we just say the advice.
- We'll link to features when they're genuinely relevant. Otherwise we'll keep our hands off the steering wheel.
What's coming next#
The first batch of real posts is being drafted right now. Topics on the shortlist:
- A practical guide to splitting bills when housemates earn very different incomes
- How to set up a chore roster that actually rotates without nagging
- The hidden costs of shared houses (and how to stop being surprised by them)
- Receipt scanning for households: what we learned shipping it
